The best thing you can do to heal your gut

With all the toxins in our food, you can assume that you have leaky gut.

Common symptoms include brain fog, fatigue, diarrhea, skin issues, sugar cravings, inflammation, and more.

I firmly believe everyone needs to pay much more attention to healing their gut (that’s why I put dozens of enzymes, pre & probiotics, and superfoods into Defend Blend).

On the bright side, there are many ways you can heal your gut. Today, I will focus on the single most effective method that’ll give you the biggest bang for its buck.

What is Leaky Gut?

Inside of your gut there is a wall that filters out toxins, called the gastrointestinal tract (GI tract).

The surface layer of the GI tract is thin, consisting only of a single-cell layer. Leaky gut occurs when that layer, the epithelium, is damaged. Then, toxins pass through the gut and into the bloodstream which causes inflammation.

These are just the basics of leaky gut—this is a big topic that I will cover in future newsletters.

Today, I will explain one practice you can use to regenerate your gut with stem cells.

Fasting

I’m sure you’ve fasted before or even fasted regularly.

Fasting drastically increases stem cell production in the gut. Leaving your stomach empty for 24 hours or more gives your gut the space it needs to regenerate and heal.

Below, I have two types of fasts you can do to heal the gut. Before I give these recommendations, a couple of important notes:

  • Fasting is not for everyone. If you are underweight or pregnant it is not a good idea.

  • Fasting is a stressor, similar to exercise. Stressors are not inherently bad, but too much/too often can cause unnecessary stress to the body.

  • If you aren’t used to fasting, try intermittent fasting for 1-2 weeks before a longer fast to get your body adjusted.

24 Hour Fast

This is simple—do not eat anything for 24 hours. When I do 24 hours, I like to drink water with salt and lemon to stay hydrated.

For the three days following your fast, you must pay close attention to what you eat.

Avoid things like:

  • Preservatives, gums, emulsifiers (essentially all processed food)

  • Alcohol

  • Non-organic produce

  • Lectin-containing vegetables (nightshades)

  • Bread and gluten (organic sourdough with high-quality flour is good)

  • Raw vegetables

  • Foods that don’t work well with you

Instead, eat things like:

  • Collagen-rich bone broth

  • Grass-fed meat, especially collagenous cuts (shank and oxtail)

  • Wild-caught fish and seafood

  • Eggs

  • Well-cooked vegetables

  • Foods that work well with you

The Master Cleanse

The Master Cleanse is the most effective fast for healing the gut.

This is a 7-day fast where you only consume lemon, cayenne, and maple syrup.

Lemon and cayenne pepper strip the mucosal lining of the gut tract. This lining develops as a protection from irritants and toxins. Removing it will allow for better nutrient absorption and reduced inflammation.

Maple syrup has a perfect blend of minerals and sugar that will not break your fast (halting autophagy or driving an insulin response). This will give you more energy without breaking your fasted state.

Interestingly, these can be easier than shorter fasts. People are typically the hungriest during the first two days.

7 days is not for everyone, but if you are generally healthy and have experience with fasting, this could be worth a shot.

Pro Tips for Fasting

  • If doing an extended fast, take bentonite clay or activated charcoal after day 2. You will release toxins from your gut, and these things will bind to them.

  • Fast during the full moon. This may sound woo-woo, but parasites come out when the moon is full, and fasting is great for killing parasites. The next one is May 23rd.

  • Eat bone broth to break your fast. Bone broth is high in gelatin which can help build and repair the gut lining. Make your own using collagenous cuts such as tendons and knuckles. Store-bought ones tend to be diluted.

Fasting is very effective. But, it is not the only way to heal the gut.

If you cannot fast, don’t worry—you’re going to learn many other strategies you can use to heal and regenerate the gut with my newsletter (I’m going to share another one of my favorites tomorrow).

There are so many things that work, you just have to pick a path and do it.

Until next time,
