ADHD & The Hunter Type Hypothesis
A secret superpower you might have
Does it irritate you when two people speak at once?
Do their words blend together, throwing everything in disarray?
Do you have trouble focusing? Make impulsive decisions? Feel the need for constant stimulation?
These are clear symptoms of attention deficit “disorder.”
But ADD/ADHD isn’t a disorder or disadvantage… it kept our ancestors alive.
The Hunter vs. Farmer Hypothesis
For most of human history, we lived in environments filled with danger. This caused our brains to adapt and develop traits to navigate our surroundings.
For groups such as hunters, these adaptations honed unique skills such as heightened awareness—where they needed to be aware of even slightest sound, because it could signal danger.
Then came the Agricultural Revolution, which shifted the focus to patience, precision, and the ability to work methodically.
Not everyone adapted to this way of life. Some retained the traits of their "hunter" ancestors—traits that would manifest as ADHD:
From “Attention Deficit Disorder: a Different Perception” by Thom Hartmann
However, these traits can still be used as a superpower.
Many top-performers, CEOs, and athletes use this “disorder” to their advantage:
Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin Group, openly discusses how his ADHD made him a successful risk-taker and visionary
Michael Phelps, the most decorated Olympian in history, has spoken about how his ability to hyperfocus allowed him to achieve unparalleled success in swimming
Barbara Corcoran, the successful real estate investor, says her ADHD helped her develop creative solutions in the competitive world of New York real estate
The key to channeling your “disadvantages” into success is by understanding how your brain works.
That way, you can design an environment where it would be hard for you not to succeed.
And the best way to gain this understanding is by looking at your DNA.
As you might already know, in the Live to 120 Masterclass, we test for over 50 genes.
Out of all of these genes, the most interesting category are undoubtedly your brain genes.
By looking at your brain genes, you’d be able to see the biological processes that are driving your behaviors. For example:
You get distracted easily and can hear every little sound around you when you’re trying to focus → your brain has difficulty regulating serotonin because of your 5-HTTLPR profile
You cannot focus unless there is an immense amount of pressure → your brain experiences lower amounts of pleasure and reward at baseline because of your DRD2 profile
As soon as you feel reward, you instantly want more → your brain clears “feel-good” chemicals out quickly because of your MAO profile
You do not work in consistent, sustained efforts. Instead, you work in intense, short outbursts → your COMT gene clears dopamine from your brain at an increased rate
Knowing how your brain works on a biological level is a superpower because not only do you understand why you behave a certain way…
But you can use supplements and protocols to manipulate specific processes in your brain to achieve your goals.
So if you’d like to gain this understanding, so you can take these insights and achieve superhuman levels of productivity, focus, and output…
