Cleanse your gut for less than $1

You might be surprised with how easy this is

Yesterday I discussed how fasting is a good tool to heal the gut.

However, with all the toxins in our food, maintaining gut health by keeping it free of toxins is of utmost importance.

In this newsletter, I will share a very simple recipe for:

  • Clearing endotoxin from the gut

  • Removing excess estrogen from the body

  • Improving motility and transit (or in simpler terms, the quality of your poops)

So if you cannot fast or are interested in keeping the gut clear of toxins, this will be useful.

Accumulation of Toxins in the Gut

Endotoxins (lipopolysaccharides) are toxins produced by bacteria in the gut. They can cause leaky gut since endotoxins disrupt the gut barrier.

This leads to inflammation, because when endotoxins enter the bloodstream, they activate immune cells, triggering an inflammatory response. This can lead to systemic inflammation.

Estrogen also accumulates in the gut and can be reabsorbed in the body.

After estrogen serves its function, it is metabolized by the liver and excreted into bile. From there, it enters the digestive tract.

A significant portion of this estrogen can be reabsorbed back into the bloodstream from the gut.

This is something you want to avoid since there are already so many estrogen/estrogenic compounds floating around in our environment and body.

How to Get Rid of Endotoxin and Estrogen

Insoluble fiber is very effective in removing endotoxin and estrogen from the gut. Since insoluble fiber doesn’t dissolve in water, it passes through the gut, binding to various substances along the way.

Think of insoluble fiber almost like a clean-up team for your gut.

The Best Way to Consume Insoluble Fiber

Raw carrots are a phenomenal way to clear the body of endotoxin and estrogen. Not only do they contain lots of insoluble fiber, but have antimicrobial properties against various pathogens in food (study).

There seem to be many more health benefits associated with eating carrots. There’s a herbalist here in Toronto and when people come to her with cancer she tells them to eat lots of carrots.

I recommend making Ray Peat’s carrot salad. Ray Peat was a well-known researcher in nutritional science and biology. He says,

“One vegetable has a special place in a diet to balance the hormones, and that is the raw carrot. It is so nearly indigestible that, when it is well chewed or grated, it helps to stimulate the intestine and reduce the reabsorption of estrogen and the absorption of bacterial toxins.”

Ray Peat

The recipe is simple.

First, peel the skin off of one carrot. Then, peel it lengthwise into long strips. Finally, dress it with oil (coconut or olive), vinegar, and salt.

Peeling them lengthwise keeps the insoluble fiber intact. High-quality oil and vinegar have germicidal effects, increasing the health benefits of the salad. Ray Peat recommends having the salad once per day in between meals, but having it infrequently or with meals is also beneficial.

Hope you enjoy it.

Until next time,
