Glycine - A Miracle Amino Acid
Anti-Inflammation, Gut Health, and Longevity
Why do chicken soup and the flu go so well together?
Ever wondered why this age-old remedy is the first thing you crave when you’re feeling sick?
It actually has to do with a simple amino acid…
Glycine is an amino acid that plays many important roles in the human body.
It’s involved in protein synthesis, collagen formation, neurotransmitter function, detoxification, energy metabolism, immune system function, and much more.
Glycine is the primary amino acid found in collagen—the protein that gives structure to your skin, joints, and connective tissue.
Here are some of it’s benefits…
Glycine improves insulin resistance and obesity.
Glycine supplementation increases insulin sensitivity, improves energy metabolism, and lowers fasting blood sugar. Because of this, it’s often recommended to diabetics and prediabetics.
On top of that, obesity, insulin resistance, and heart disease are all correlated with a glycine deficiency (shown in this paper).
Glycine has anti-aging properties.
Restriction of methionine—an essential amino acid—increases lifespan in rats. Glycine lowers methionine toxicity, which increased rodent lifespan according to this study.
Glycine improves sleep quality, deep sleep, and fatigue.
When taken before bed, glycine has significant calming effects. This contributes to increased deep sleep, better sleep quality, and less fatigue.
Glycine also reduced the number of night time urinations and improved sleep latency in this study.
Glycine significantly reduces inflammation.
It does so by inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines, protecting against tissue damage, and strengthening the immune system. Glycine is essential for glutathione synthesis, which greatly decreases oxidative stress.
The best sources of glycine come from collagen-rich foods. Bone broth, gelatin, and collagenous cuts of beef are great places to start.
But make sure to avoid collagen peptides. They’re contaminated with heavy metals, antibiotics, and glyphosate.
Instead, supplement with pure glycine powder or take capsules, such as from LifeBlud. If you’d like 10% off you can use my code “KKO”.
Until next time,
