Logical vs. Emotional Thinking
Why You Think The Way You Do
Why are some people naturally empathetic, while others stoic and emotionless?
Ask a friend and they’d tell you:
“It probably has to do with their upbringing, culture, and social conditioning.”
This is not necessarily true.
Logical vs. emotional thinking tendencies have everything to do with your DNA.
Introducing…
The ADRA2B Gene
The ADRA2B gene determines how you process emotional experiences.
It regulates two neurotransmitters in your brain.
Adrenaline (epinephrine) is the “fight-or-fight” neurochemical. It prepares you for quick action in stressful situations. It increases heart rate, blood pressure, and energy availability.
Noradrenaline (norepinephrine) helps maintain alertness and focus, especially when stressed. It activates the amygdala—a region in the brain that links emotions to memories, experiences, and specific behaviors.
With the DD and ID variants of this gene, you’re an emotional thinker.
Your adrenaline and noradrenaline levels are imbalanced.
This leads to…
Trauma: You have a vivid recall of emotionally intense experiences.
Increased Empathy: You’re more attuned to people's emotions, which makes you more empathetic.
Risk of Stress-Related Conditions: Greater susceptibility to anxiety and PTSD due to your deep emotional responses.
Emotional Decision-Making: You prioritize emotional factors over logic and make decisions based on how they feel to you.
But with the II variant of the ADRA2B gene, you’re a logical thinker.
Your adrenaline and noradrenaline levels are properly balanced.
Which leads to…
Balanced Emotions: You have a typical regulation of noradrenaline, leading to a less intense emotional memory.
Objective Thinker: You have a more rational and detached approach to charged situations and you’re less influenced by emotional weight.
Cool, Calm, & Collected: You’re better able to remain calm under pressure because your amygdala is less activated by intense events.
Resilience to Emotional Burnout: You’re less likely to experience emotional fatigue because of your moderate response to stressful events.
Your DNA shapes not only the way you look, but also the way you think.
And by understanding your genes…
You’ll know exactly why you think the way you do—why you procrastinate, your neurotic tendencies, why you get irritated at certain things, your distractibility, and so much more.
Would you like to have this understanding of yourself?
Until next time,
