Vietnamese people should be fat.
The worst possible gene for satiety signaling (feeling satisfaction from food) is very common among Vietnamese people.
But according to the Global Obesity Observatory, only 1.97% of men in Vietnam are obese. In the US, that number is 21 times higher.
How is Vietnam one of the leanest countries in the world?
Because they align their eating with their genetics.
The MC4R gene regulates your hunger, appetite, and body weight.
It determines your satisfaction from food and is one of the best studied genes in relation to weight gain. MC4R is expressed in the hypothalamus, a region in your brain that controls hunger and appetite.
MC4R functioned as a survival mechanism.
Our ancestors didn’t have access to nutrition like we do. The ones that survived sought out variety, hitting all of their micronutrient needs. Some of us still have this. But now, it leads to an insatiable hunger, stemming from our food choices.
