The Hidden Dangers in Your Tap Water

And what you can do about it

What happens when you put frogs in pesticide water?

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, biologist Tyrone Hayes at UC Berkeley ran a study to find this out.

He wanted to understand the effects of one of the most widely used pesticides in the US, atrazine, on frogs.

The results were shocking.

Male frogs:

  • Grew female gonadal tissue

  • Produced eggs

  • Mated with each other

In the experiment, male African clawed frogs (Xenopus laevis) were raised in water containing low concentrations of atrazine.

The concentration was actually below what EPA allows in drinking water.

The results?

  • Many of the exposed male frogs developed hermaphroditism (having both male and female gonadal tissue).

  • Some males grew ovarian tissue in their testes or even produced eggs.

  • Atrazine-exposed males showed reduced testosterone levels, smaller larynxes (affecting mating calls), and were less likely to reproduce successfully with females.

  • In some cases, male frogs were chemically “feminized” to the point that they behaved and functioned as females, mating with other males and producing viable eggs.

Atrazine is a potent endocrine disrupter, and the effects aren’t only seen in animals.

  • A study of over 130,000 births found that atrazine exposure was linked to preterm births, even at levels below the EPA’s legal limit.

  • In another study, babies born to mothers exposed to atrazine had smaller head sizes.

The problem with atrazine is that it’s not going away on its own anytime soon.

But fortunately, you can protect yourself.

The first thing you can do?

Do NOT drink tap water. Ever.

Drink bottled or filtered water.

I personally use AquaTru’s reverse osmosis filter, because it removes removes 97% of atrazine, and 98.8% of other contaminants like lead according to third-party tests.

This ensures the water you're drinking is clean and free of harmful toxins.

They’re having a sale right now, offering $100 off on select filters.
