A sea anemone just rewrote how we think about fighting viruses
Researchers discovered an antiviral defense mechanism in sea anemones that operates completely differently from the human immune system.
Ours relies on interferon signaling, a complex cascade that takes time to kick in and can be hijacked by certain viruses. This organism uses something else entirely. A fundamentally different solution to the same problem.
Here's why this matters beyond being a cool science fact.
Every antiviral drug we've ever developed has been modeled on human biology. Same target. Same pathway. Same blind spots.
If evolution solved "how to kill a virus" more than once, using completely different tools that's not just interesting. That's a new direction for drug development that we haven't explored yet.

Two rodent-borne viruses are quietly coming back. Here's what I actually think about that.
Hantavirus has been making headlines since a cluster of cases appeared aboard a cruise ship in May 2026. But hantavirus isn't the only one worth watching.
A study published in Nature npj Viruses in 2026 by researchers at UC Davis modeled the spread of arenaviruses — a separate family of rodent-borne viruses that cause severe hemorrhagic fevers with fatality rates between 5% and 30% depending on the strain. Viruses like Junín, Machupo, and Guanarito. Their finding: climate-driven shifts in rodent populations are pushing these viruses into regions that have never encountered them before.
Two different virus families. Same vector. Same direction of travel. Read the arenavirus research here.
The viruses that tend to catch people off guard are never the ones dominating headlines. They're the ones being quietly tracked in surveillance data that nobody outside of epidemiology is reading.
If you're in a rural area, spend time camping, or have had rodent activity near your home it's worth knowing the early symptoms of both.
We'll keep tracking. I'll flag it if the numbers start looking like something more than background noise.
Creatine might be doing something in your brain that nobody told you about
Creatine is being studied as an adjunct treatment for depression. Not as a standalone. As something that may make antidepressants work better and faster in certain patients.
The mechanism has nothing to do with muscle.
The brain is one of the highest energy-consuming organs in the body. Creatine plays a direct role in cellular energy metabolism. And there's a growing body of evidence suggesting that disrupted brain energy metabolism is a feature not just a byproduct of depressive disorders.
What's interesting to me is that this has been sitting in plain sight for years. Creatine is one of the most studied supplements in existence. The safety profile is about as clean as it gets. And yet nobody connected the dots to mental health at scale until recently.
This is exactly the pattern I keep pointing at. The most useful things aren't always new. Sometimes they're just being looked at differently.
