What You Didn't Know About Melatonin

Deep Sleep, Cancer Prevention, Mitochondrial Function, Metabolism, and Longevity

Melatonin is much more potent than you think.

You probably take it to fall asleep, but I bet you don’t know about it’s other crazy benefits.

This will surprise you.

We’ll talk about all of these in a second.

But first…

Melatonin is the key hormone in regulating your sleep-wake cycle.

It’s produced by the pineal gland and the mitochondria, with levels decreasing in the morning and rising in the evening—signaling to the body that it’s time to sleep.

The pineal gland is a tiny, pea-sized organ located deep in the brain.

The mitochondria are like tiny power plants inside your cells.

They produce energy in the form of ATP, fueling cellular functions. They also play a role in cell growth, death, and protection from harmful compounds such as free radicals.

And as your brain cells age, these power plants don’t work as efficiently. They struggle to produce energy, resulting in the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS)—which act like dangerous fumes coming from these power plants.

Over time, damage builds up and the mitochondria slows down.

But melatonin acts like a repair man for your mitochondria by improving energy production and reducing harmful ROS/RNS fumes.

Take a look at this diagram.

Melatonin supplementation restores youthful mitochondrial function.

Which is responsible for its host of benefits…

  • improved restorative sleep

  • oxidative stress protection

  • neuroprotection & brain health

  • anti-inflammation

  • cancer prevention

  • increased metabolism

  • growth hormone release

  • enhanced immune system

But how should you take it?

Supplement with a low dose of melatonin 30-60 minutes before bed.

This is extremely important.

Most over-the-counter melatonin supplements contain doses much higher than what the body naturally produces, which can negatively affect other hormonal systems.

We only produce 0.3 milligrams of melatonin a day, so stay below that.

This way, you’ll experience all of the benefits and none of the downsides.

Until next time,
