World's Oldest Antibiotic

The powerful antibiotic properties of silver

The French Aristocracy used to be called Blue Bloods.

This was because they ate off of silver and used silver utensils. The amount of silver in their body gave their skin a pale blue tint.

While this may seem like a bad thing (having so much metal in your body that your skin changes color), they were incredibly healthy.

In fact, when the plague hit Europe, they didn’t get sick.

Why?

Silver has potent antimicrobial properties. It’s been used medicinally since ancient times in Ancient Egypt and Rome and is often called the world’s oldest antibiotic.

Hippocrates, the "Father of Medicine," talked about silver's antimicrobial properties back in 400 B.C.

Silver kills bacteria by interfering with their metabolism, increasing the production of reactive oxygen species (ROS).

It’s extremely effective when used with antibiotics—this study found that silver can make antibiotics 1,000 times more effective and may allow antibiotics to combat antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

Silver does this by making the bacteria’s membranes more permeable, allowing the antibiotics to penetrate the cells.

So, how can you use silver?

  • Dress wounds and skin infections

  • Consume it orally to fight bacterial infections

  • Apply it to your skin to fight acne

  • Swish it in your mouth with coconut oil to kill bacteria and improve your oral microbiome

  • Use it to treat infections on your pets

However, not all silver products are created equal.

The best one I’ve seen is by 3rd Rock Essentials (no affiliation). His product is chelated silver, which is more bioavailable than colloidal silver.

Fun fact: Nobody in Guerry’s (founder of 3rd Rock Essentials) family got sick during Covid. I wonder why.

Silver's been used forever, and it’s a promising option if you want to prevent infections.

Just don’t go overboard—your skin will literally turn blue.

Until next time,
