Jet Lag Isn't Real

Learn about the real reason why you feel terrible after travel

Ever been jet lagged?

As in, you feel disoriented, tired, and just terrible after traveling?

While you might think this is jet lag, I recently found research that made me question this.

A study conducted in 2022 tested 195 flights for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and found extreme levels of benzene in planes.

Benzene is a carcinogen that causes dizziness, headaches, and other cognitive issues short-term. It gets in planes via the oil particles from the engine, since the HEPA air filters on planes cannot remove them.

This makes more sense to me as the main culprit of feeling terrible after flying… if I lose a few hours of sleep, I always feel better than I do after flying.

So, how can you mitigate the harms of benzene while traveling?

Through detox, particularly by focusing on your liver. Here are the three biggest needle movers for liver detox.

  • Acetylcysteine which is a powerful antioxidant that helps to replenish glutathione.

  • Alpha Lipoic Acid supports liver function and helps with detox. Small amounts can be found in organ meats, spinach, broccoli, tomatoes, and brussels sprouts.

  • Selenium is an essential mineral that supports antioxidant defense. Brazil nuts, different types of seafood, meat, and eggs are all quality sources of selenium.

If you don’t want to buy these supplements, try to get a sweat going the next day (through exercise or sauna), to help your body remove excess toxins.

By doing these things, not only will you feel better on vacation, but you’ll also prevent health problems down the road.

Until next time,
